Variable: Chronic leukemias (cml, cll) may develop very slowly. Acute leukemias (aml, all) are often more "acute" and fast developing. Exactly when a leukemia develops and is clinically noticed is impossible to say. I'm sorry to hear about your daughter.

Blood test: Is a very helpful test. A blood chem panel will produce numbers that will present if the values are within normal limits. Swollen gums can be anything and is merely one of the many symptoms to diagnose leukemia. I'm sorry for your loss...
