are there health hazards in drinking soft or hard water over a long period of time? i live in eastern canada and the water is hard in my region.

Depends: Depending on what exactly is in your water. High mineral content water can actually be good for you if the minerals are beneficial ones. Magnesium, calcium, and such are good for you.
