What is a general surgeon?

Core knowledge: General surgeons have extensive core knowledge in fundamental areas such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, critical care, and cancer. General surgeons have specialized knowledge and skill relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management focusing on the: abdominal organs; breast, skin, & soft tissue; head/neck; peripheral arteries & veins.

Mostly abdominal: Traditionally did all surgery except neuro. Now mostly abdominal, laparoscopic, trauma, and in some communities some vascular. New status: chest vascular heart plastic used to be in general but now have separate boards and skills.
