Many causes.: Cough usually is caused by three different etiologies. It can be caused from post nasal drip such as from the sinuses or from the stomach contents refluxing into the lungs or from an intrinsic lung condition such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia. Sometimes medications such as ace-inhibitors can cause a nagging cough. A cough lasting more than a week or so should prompt a doctor's visit.

Many possibilities..: An acute cough is usually due to acute bronchitis, either bacterial or viral. A chronic cough is usually due to bronchospasm from any cause, gerd, post-nasal drip or some combination of these diagnoses. They all have different treatments so you need a diagnosis by your doctor so effective treatment can be given.
