TIPS: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt or (tips) is a procedure in which a shunt is placed between the portal vein and the hepatic vein. This procedure is performed usually through the jugular vein and is helps relieve the portal pressure so the esophageal and stomach bleeding does not occur as readily in patients with advanced liver disease. It is not without potential complications.
