Was it loud?: If you heard what sounded like a big pop or gun shot then it could be an achilles rupture. Is there swelling there? I would see your local sports med doc and have them ultrasound the area or MRI it to take a look at it. If fully rupture this could require surgery. If not ruptured but strained then you may be able to do pt and immobiliization.

Scar tissue: Crackling coming from the achilles tendon when it is stressed , like being on tippy toes, could be due to scar tissue around the tendon sheath. The sound is called 'crepitus' and implies that there may be significant scar around the tendon. Deep massage of the tendon may help, in addition to very gentle stretching, icing and use of a heel lift. If it does not get better, see a podiatric physic.
