A member asked:

When radio active iodine is given, is it always given to kill your thyroid? or can smaller doses be given to kill some of your thyroid?

In an ideal world...: The object would be to kill just the right amount of your thyroid, but that doesn't usually happen, the next best thing is to kill all or most of it so that you can get on with your life. Imagine the expense and inconvenience having to take radioactive iodine more than once to kill just the right amount....

Goal is to ablate: In patients receiving rai for grave's disease, our goal is to completely ablate the gland for good reasons: 1) residual thyroid tissue can still cause hyperthryoidism over the long term. 2) thyroid cancer risk really increases upon exposure to rai, so it's best to just be done with it.
