It means he should : Be observed closely and a MRI of the spine should be obtained as it is a left type curve rather than a right bent one which can sometimes be due to a neurologic issue. Most curves do not need surgical treatment and some need bracing. The indications for treatment depend on age of patient, size & location of curve and rate of progression or worsening.

If it needs to be: Scoliosis is curvature of the spine. Whether or not it needs to be corrected depends on why they have it, how big the curve is and how it's behaving. Some children need more imaging studies like MRI to see if there is another cause for it. Some scoliosis curves are observed while others need bracing and few of them need surgery for correction. Your child should see a specialist.

Basic label: The term just means the spine curves a small amount to the left and the apparent center of the curve is at the mid chest. It could happen from something as simple as a kid having a bit of chest pain with a respiratory illness and assuming a position of comfort (called splinting). It could be an early sign of a worisome spine issue. At this age, you should followup with repeat x-rays in 3 months
