Antibacterial rinse: Chlorhexidine is present in oral rinses & is marketed under one brand name known as peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). It is often used as an active ingredient in mouthwash designed to reduce dental plaque and oral bacteria and therfore used as an aid in contolling periodontal disease. Continued use of products containing Chlorhexidine for long periods can cause stains on teeth and composite fillings and alter taste.

Prescription Rinse: The positive charged ions in the rinse are attracted to the very negative charged bacteria in the mouth, disrupts the adhesion, cell membrane function, and disrupts bacterial metabolism of the bad bacteria in the mouth. There are several prescription brands available. Because of its staining of the teeth, it must be used as prescribed . Luckily this stain can be easily removed by your dentist.

Mouth rinse: This is an antibacterial mouthrinse. Commonly prescribed after some surgeries, especially if you are not allowed to brush for some time. Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) is an example. By prescription only. Prolonged use puts you at greater risk for fungal infection. Side effects include loss of taste and staining of teeth and tongue. They are reversible. Good stuff when used as directed.

Antibacterial agent: Chlorhexidine gluconate is an antibactierial agent often used in an oral mouthwash. It is a good rinse to help control active gum infections and inflamation. Proctor and gamble came out with Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) years ago but several other products are available. One drawback is that it is not discriminatory. Kills harmful germs and good germs so it can change the flora leading to other infections.
