A member asked:

If you have a severe allergic reaction to contrast can you still have a pet scan? and also if you have diabetes can you have this test?

Yes: You just have the ct without IV contrast, and it is used to perform anatomic assessment and to help calibrate the pet scan but not as good as a ct with contrast. However, the pet scan is even better than the ct in picking up small tumors.

Yes and yes : The perscam due is nuclear based and most do not have an allergy to it. It is unrelated to the contract dye used with ct scans. And diabetes sugar needs to be below 200 at time of teat for the pet scan to be accurate.

Yes; different chem: Typically pet scan uses a small amount of radioactive material which tends to accumulate in higher amount in more active tissues such as tumor or site of infection, thus better seen on scan. Ct contrast uses a radioopaque substance that is different than one for pet, thus you should be fine. Make sure your diabetes/sugar is under good control. Consult doc and best of luck to you.
