Yes: Absolutely! especially if your diet is low in calcium. Talk with your doctor about the appropriate amount if you are unsure. In addition, all nursing mothers should continue to take prenatal vitamins at least until your baby has weaned from the breast.

Yes: Having a diet rich in calcium is ideal for the bone structure and health of both mom and baby. If you don't eat many calcium-rich foods, a calcium supplement may be helpful.

A 24-year-old member asked:

Should I increase my calcium intake to help strengthen my baby's bones?

Dr. Sheila Goodman

Calcium is important: As a pregnant woman, you should get 1500 mg of calcium daily in 3 separated doses. This is more for you than for your baby since the baby will take whatever it needs from your system if you don't have enough. You should also make sure that you have enough vitamin d. The only sources are sun and pills. If you live in the midwest or are a woman of color you need about 1-2, 000 units daily.
A 45-year-old member asked:

Can an antacid after a heavy meal help reduce my difficulty sleeping?

Dr. Jay Goldberg

Yes: An antacid can definitely help, but so can something simple like positional changes. Sitting upright or standing for 3-4 hours after dinner can reduce reflux/heartburn and allow for a better night sleep.

A 30-year-old female asked:

I am allergic to milk and eggs since birth, how can I improve my calcium levels?

Dr. James Ferguson

Diet or supplement: Calcium is present in a number of non bovine products. Goat's milk, feta cheese, fortified orange juice, other milk substitutes, etc. It is also readily as a straight calcium pill, often sold with vitamin d added. Another simple source is "tums" that has calcium in its antacid tablets.
