Depends on what you mean by "how long you wait". It would be a mistake to wait a week or two; but it wouldn't matter if it were a few days. Doxycycline is not given to improve treatment for gonorrhea; it is given only in case the person with gonorrhea also has chlamydia. If chlamydia isn't present, it doesn't matter whether doxy is given or if there is any delay in treatment.
