A member asked:

Got doc to order a peripheral smear for anemia work-up - what does this entail? extremely labor intensive? will they look at red or white cells/both ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Simple test.: This just needs a drop of blood placed on a microscope slide. It is stained so the cells are visible and the blood is then evaluated under a microscope. All types of blood cells, red, white and platelet, will be seen. The test is helpful in diagnosing many different kinds of blood issues.
