Isolated problems: A learning disorder is defined on the basis of a discrepancy between a person's overall intelligence and accomplishments in a specific area of learning such as reading or mathematics. Imagine someone with an iq of 120 (bright) who, despite adequate exposure to the subject, is reading at a level 2-3 years below age level. The combination of overall capacity and specific deficiency is the key.

Historically, a: Specific Learning Disability = "an unexpected difficulty in reading, written expression or math in a child with an average to above average IQ" defined by discrepant achievement vs. ability or IQ scores.
