Ir simply means you: Avoid or withdraw from something. The opposite would be approach behaviors where you move toward the object or situation. We usually avoid things that are painful, distressing or unpleasant and approach things that are pleasant or rewarding.

Avoiding fears: Avoidance behaviors are those in which a person attempts to escape or avoid some feared, uncomfortable or anxiety provoking person/place/thing. Ex, someone who is socially self-conscious avoids going into crowded places. The behaviors can be done with and without full awareness from the person doing them depending on the level of insight. On the other hand, confrontation (of fears) helps heal.
