Various reasons: People use avoidance tactics and strategies for a variety of reasons including: fear of being judged, low self-esteem, learning this behavior by watching a parent be avoidant. The problem with avoidance is that it rarely if ever solves problems. There is a model that discusses being either passive, aggressive, or assertive. Generally the most healthy behavior falls into the assertive range.
