Anti-inflammatory: Elidel (pimecrolimus) is a topical anti-inflammatory cream that belongs to the class called calcineurin inhibitors. It works to calm inflammation in the skin as well as the related itch. It is similar to a topical corticosteroid, but works differently and has a different side effect profile. This cream is generally used for atopic dermatitis as a second-line agent after topical steroids.

Elidel (pimecrolimus): Elidel is the trade name for pimecrolimus which is a derivative of the macrolactam ascomycin which is an immunosuppressant. Its mechanism of action appears to involve inhibition of the activation of t cells. It also prevents the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells. The drug may impair local immunosurveillance. It is second line therapy for atopic dermatitis.
