Removal of a growth: About 20% of adults over 50 have at least one adenomatous growth on the lining of the colon and rectum. Some of these will grow into cancer if left in place. At colonoscopy these polyps can be found and removed, a process called polypectomy. There are several different tools that can be used. Small polyps are pinched off with forceps. Larger polyps are lassoed with a wire and cauterized.
