Does the silver amalgam seep into your gums from a tooth filling over the years?

No.: Silver fillings (a.K.A. Amalgams) do not normally enter the gums except sometimes when removed by the dentist. The high speed drill can propel pieces of the silver so hard that they can penetrate the surface of the gum and get trapped. This is called an amalgam tattoo. The amalgam, however, can stain the tooth structure inside.

Definitely, no: Amalgam is a safe and durable choice. Most research finds no relationship between fillings and symptoms of mercury poisoning or other side effects. Eventually, any cavity if not treated, can lead to pain, infection, root canal and even tooth loss. See your dentist for evaluation, x-rays and treatment.

No: But in time the silver in the amalgam tarnish giving the filling margins with the tooth that gray shade.
