A member asked:

What are reasons to get heart bypass surgery rather than angioplasty with a stent to open the arteries?

Several: There are specific indications for surgery vs stents. 3 vessel disease in diabetic, 3 vessel disease with decreased function, left main disease, severe disease that can't be treated with stent, disease associated with other issues that require surgery like aortic stenosis or mitral disease. That's a start.

Angioplasty or bypas: Left main disease, bifurcation stenosis, calcified arteries, and multivessel disease are common reasons for opting bypass surgery over angioplasty.
