Proteinuria: For a random urine sample, the normal values are approximately 0 to 8 mg/dl. For a 24-hour urine collection, the normal value is less than 80 mg per 24 hours. The most common cause of proteinuria is diabetic nephropathy; in this case, proper glycemic control may slow the progression. If protein levels are above 3.5 grams in 24 hours it is called nephrotic syndrome.
