Sebacious cysts: The most common soft masses found in the scalp are sebacious cysts. These are basically pimples that began deeper in the skin so instead of looking like a white head, they grow deeper and fill up like a tiny water balloon. Because they are deep in the skin they usually cannot be simply popped like a pimple but have to be opened and cleaned out and sometimes the whole sac has to be removed.
