Outside vs inside: Inside the knee, i worry about your meniscus which could be torn or bruised. Torn acl, PCL could cause instability and clicking. If in front of knee, the knee cap may be sliding in it's groove improperly. Could also be a ganglion, para-meniscal cyst, or plica syndrome. Outside the knee could be the iliotibial band anserine tendons.

Depends: Could be a torn meniscus or a joint mice. Either could be diagnosed and treated by arthroscopy.
