Knee Pain: Overuse , repeated trauma, and advancing age can cause knee joint "wear and tear" arthritis, which can cause inflammation and a build up of scar and bony tissue in the joint. This will cause the clicking and grinding sounds, often accompanied by a build up of fluid in the joint and bursa. This fluid can be removed to relieve the pressure and pain.

Wear and tear : Osteoarthritis is due to wearing out of the knee and it's support structures. Grinding and clicking are symptoms of this process. Sometimes joint effusions ("water on the knee") develops. Removing this fluid is not harmful, and frequently helpful.
