Imaging studies: You seem young for "bone on bone" disease (AKA advanced arthritis). Xrays would be helpful as an initial screening imaging study to check for arthritis of your knee. If it is tendinitis, the majority of the time it is patellar tendinitis and is usually physical therapy responsive (with or without additional help with NSAIDs which are medications like ibuprofen, naprosyn).
