Yes, VERY MUCH: Fetal alcohol syndrome, caused mainly be drinking in the first trimester, is associated with a number of birth defects, including abnormalities in the face (widespread eyes, lack of clear upper lip border, low set ears) which is often associated with heart problems and mental retardation. Drinking in later trimesters is more associated with learning disabilities, hyperactivity and other problems.

The only cause of : FAS is fetal exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol is a teratogen, a substance that disrupts fetal development, causing birth defects. Binge drinking, having 4 or more standard drinks for a woman, is especially harmful The brain & other organs start forming 3 weeks after conception, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. Thus, social drinking + an unplanned pregnancy can cause FAS.
