Anemia tests: More frequently done are complete blood count (to check hemoglobin, hemotocrit, other parameters), iron, ferritin, tibc, transferrin saturation, B12 level, sickle cell test. Protein electrophoresis might be used to test for abnormal hemoglobins such as those in sickle cell or in thalassemia.

Abnormal hemoglobin: There are many different causes of anemia from deficiency of certain substances- iron, vitamin etc, to destruction of red blood cell due to drugs, toxin etc, enzymes deficiency etc . Hemoglobin electrophoresis can tell you if you have abnormal type of hemoglobin that may be related to your anemia/ may be causing your anemia- such as sickle cell disease, thalasemia, hemoglobin e, c, etc.
