Can be multifaceted : Most common is wear & tear as people age, however, small amounts of regurgitation (leaking) is normal for many valves & is assessed by echocardiography.

Multiple ways: The are multiple causes for leaky heart valves. Some of the most common causes are: congenital (born that way), rheumatic disease, deterioration over time, and infection of the valve.
