Is it possible to lose an autism diagnosis?

Overcome - disprove: Autism is a label. For some it can be a diagnosis, and for others just a description of strong behavior. Many become labeled as autism as a child, but as they mature, they outgrow or overcome the autism behavior. They can then disprove the "diagnosis".

Interesting phrasing: I asked temple grandin & some of my patients who graduated from mit & other big-name schools if they felt they still had enough clinical symptoms to be diagnosed as having autism. They all said, "yes." the purpose of intensive, early behavioral & educational intervention is to break up a big chunk of autism into smaller bits of quirkiness to the point that they don't interefere with function.

Possible: Since is has become common for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders to be mad earlier and ealier, a misdiagnosis can occur. For instance many children who have significant hearning congenital or early acquired hearing loss may be diagnosed with autism. Children who have been neglected may have austistic characteristics. There are other reasons for mistaken diagnosis
