Treatment available: Dermatologists (skin doctors) can help improve the appearance of scars. Some treatments include covering a healing scar with silicone gel or sheets of silicone. Sometimes, hydrocortisone-type creams are used to decrease inflammation at scar sites. For scars that are getting bigger (keloids), steroid injections can help. Color changes are probably worse if a new scar is exposed to sunlight.

Scar creams: Products such as mederma, bio oil or scar guard can improve the appearance of scars flattening the scar and allowing the redness to potentially resolve faster. If there is residual color it will lighten in time. If not you may need prescription cream at a later date.

Sun Protection: While many over-the-counter products may claim to help with scar healing, the best way to minimize discoloration from a scar is to minimize sun exposure. Sunlight tends to cause temporary darkening of scars so avoidance and use of sunscreen are the best solution. Most darkening from scars will fade with time, but if they persist, dermatologists can use lasers and creams to help them fade.
