Not typically: Tonsillitis and pharyngitis will typically take care of itself. There can be rare complications such as abscesses that can cause problems. If the thought is that it is viral, then you will be fine. Just get checked if it's getting worse or you have concerns.

Cleaning your tongue: Cleaning your tongue will reduce the bacteria on your tongue. It will not affect tonsilitis. Mouthwash is useless for both conditions. Challenge this doctor's response.
