Second opinion. : There are many reasons to have TMJ surgery. But unless you have heard it from more than one person (the one doing the surgery) then go get a second and even third opinion. Don't tell them you have had it recommended but go i and have them diagnose you without a biased opinion.

Second opinion?: Specific advice is beyond this forum. Without knowing why the surgery is being recommended, I have no idea what is best. That said, very few of my patients need this type of surgery. To me, surgery is a last resort and outcomes vary widely. What really strikes me is your uncertainty. I would never have a procedure if i was not convinced it was indicated. I would get another opinion.

Second opinion: I would get a second opinion before getting the surgery. In some cases, TMJ problems can be treated with a splint (also bruxism appliance) that is worn at night.

What are you doing?: Are you getting orthognathic surgery to correct your bite or the tmd issues? These are not necessarily related and one is not indicated for treatment of the other and vice versa. By this point you should know if the surgery will have a predictable effect on your condition. If you are still unsure i would not proceed and seek a second opinion about what is going on.

TMJ Orthognathics: The answer to your question depends on many factors. What kind of TMJ problems do you have? What kind of jaw deformity do you have? Exactly what kind of surgery has been recommended? As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, it's very common for us to perform orthognathic surgery in TMJ patients to correct jaw deformities. You should discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Good luck!

STOP!!!: Major decision. Cancel surgery. Get other opinions. I would recommend getting one or more opinions from the chairman of the oral surgery department of regional dental schools in your area. Good luck.
