Melanonychia: Longitudinal melanonychia is a brown-to-black line within the nail. It is frequently seen in patients with darker skin types and often on multiple nails. It can be seen in certain syndromes (e.g., laugier-hunziker) or due to medications. Rarely, it can represent a melanoma (cancer) of the nail and so should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Brown nail: Usually it is a type of mole or a fungal infection. Be sure to see a dermatologist to make sure it isn't serious.

Pigmentation: Vertical nail pigmentation or melonychia can be caused by various growths in the growth plate of the nail called the matrix. These growths can be either benign or malignant. Benign melonychia is relatively common in patients of color e.g. Hispanics and blacks. Melonychia of recent onset or with recent changes is best evaluated by a dermatologist.
