No. : 99% of thyroid swellings are benign. About 5-7% of the general population has some palpable nodules or swelling on examination by a physician. If you do an ultrasound to look, the rate goes up to about 20%. Currently standard evaluation does a lot of unnecessary testing for these things. Consider cancer if you had radiation to the neck, a family history, or rapidly enlarging mass.
