What is the definition or description of: ct of abdomen shows intussusception?

Intussusception: Is telescoping of the intestine. It is a pathological finding that need to be addressed because it might associated with an underlying malignancy. Recently and due to high- speed multiple cut ct scan, intussusception is frequently seen and is secondary to normal peristalsis of the bowel. In this situation, a repeat ct is required for confirmation.

Target sign: Ct scan should be done with enterl contrast. It will show possible bowel dilatation and a "target" or "bullseye" sign which is a cross section of the intussusception.

Looks like a target: An intussusception is a condition where one loop of the bowel telescopes into another. On ct one sees concentric circles where the layers of the bowel are duplicated. In children, we usually use ultrasound and see a "target" sign. It is important to know that normal children have transient intussusceptions that do not mean there is a problem.
