Cholesterol in HDL: Lipoprotein particles carry cholesterol and triglycerides in the circulation. These particles vary in size, density, types of protein on the outer surface, and amount of cholesterol and triglycerides carried. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol represents the amount of cholesterol uniquely contained in HDL particles.

Cars and Passengers: Hdl cholesterol (hdl-c) defines the amount of cholesterol carried in HDL particles. Cholesterol doesn't float freely in the blood .Cholesterol is a fat. Think of the blood as water. Oil & water do not mix. Cholesterol (and triglycerides) are transported throughout the body in "vehicles" called particles. Hdl is one of these. Cholesterol is a passenger. Hdl-c is the amt. Of cholesterol in HDL cars.

HDL; NOT Cholesterol: Lipoprotein particles carry fat molecules: cholesterol, phospholipids ; triglycerides around the body in the water outside cells, including the blood. These particles vary in types of protein on the outer surface, ↓density ; ↑size (5 groups) according to the number of fat molecules carried. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is the amount of cholesterol contained within HDL particles.
