Definition: The PCL is a ligament that like the acl, cannot really be "repaired". Therefore, we create tunnels in the bone above and below where the original ligament was, and place a tendon "graft". This graft is about the same size as the original PCL ligament, and gets fixed to the tunnels with either screws, buttons, or a combination. The new ligament then takes about 8 months to totally mature.

Ligament surgery : Posterior cruciate ligament (pcl) reconstruction is surgery to replace (not repair) the ligament that keeps the leg from translating backwards behind the thighbone. This is typically done when the patient is functional unstable on the leg due to a tear of the pcl. The ligament is replaced by a tendon graft either taken from the patient themselves or one prepared by a tissue bank from a cadaver.
