CT is a 3-D scan....: That provides an x-ray cross-sectional view of the scanned body "slice, " allowing any blood or fluid collection to be accurately hit by a long needle or tube that drains off the fluid. The cat or ct scan allows much more accuracy than a "blind" poke with a needle, and also allows the doctor doing the fluid evacuation to see what structures lie along the needle path (more safe; less trauma).

CT guided drainage: Ct uses x-rays to see the anatomy inside the body. This procedure is typically done by a radiologist. The patient is usually sedated and the skin over the area of interest is cleaned and anesthetized. Then with the help of the ct, the needle is passed through the skin and into the fluid collection. This procedure can also be done for biopsy or treatment of certain types of tumors.
