A member asked:

My husband blood results shows total cholesterol -220 , hdl -40 , ldl -154 is this counts normal for age 28 ?

No.: His total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol values are high. The recommended level for total cholesterol is less than 200, and the recommended level for LDL is less than 110. If he has any history of heart disease in his family (father, brother, uncle, grandfather, etc.), i would suggest he share his results with his primary care doctor or a cardiologist.

No, Probably VeryBad: Bad values any age. Cholesterol is a fat made by every body cell & not best test, promoted because cheaper. Ldl particles are the primary driver of atherosclerosis; large-hdl can help prevent/regress. Ldl & HDL are lipoproteins, i.e. Protein particles which carry all fats in the water outside cells. Ldl is always in nmol/l, best <700, HDL in µmol/l, best large-hdl >10. See NMR particle test, <$100.

Depends on Particles: Cardiovascular (cvd) risk is related to the number of LDL and HDL particles (ldl-p, hdl-p). Ldl can be estimated by cholesterol (ldl-c) or measured by particle number (ldl-p). Ldl-c and ldl-p do not equally predict cardiovascular risk. When ldl-c and ldl-p values disagree (due to cholesterol variability per particle) cvd risk tracks with LDL particle number, not ldl-c values.
