Depends: It really depends on what is causing the problem. A splint is a great way to protect the joint. Most facial and jaw pain that is not teeth related are caused by muscle pain in the head, face and neck region. Treating these areas also will help increase the success of treatment.

TMJ specialist : Your situation indicates you need to consult with TMJ specialist . Since there is no relief from arthoscopy , doctor need to reexamine TMJ position, teeth position and may realign both . Realigning of your teeth is usually done by orthodontic means or teeth remodel to establish correct bite. Post correction you will need permanent splint to wear at night.

Depends: Very complex problem. I assume you are no longer in pain and you now have a bite shift. Post op splint? Managed by surgeon and TMJ splint doc? Experts? Ask your surgeon, you may need a different splint. Gradual modification of the splint. Sometimes orthodontic treatment.
