Epidural steroid injections can reduce or eliminate inflammatory reaction that is the source of the pain which may or may not recur depending on the initial cause or etiology. For example, most herniated discs get better, so after the injection, your body is healing while the steroid is controlling the inflammation. It is a matter of timing

Typically epidural injections work best if placed next to or on top of the level of pathology. Sometimes these injections need to be repeated for sustained relief.
