WHAT PROBLEMS?: What kidney problems are you trying to prevent? Hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic which stimulates your kidneys to remove fluid from your blood via potassium. If you are taking to help control blood pressure, a better choice of kidney protective blood pressure medications would be an ace- inhibitor such as lisinopril, particularly if you are diabetic.
