If hepatitis B is: Still present for 6 months after infection started, then it is called chronic. Many people remain infected for decades without much or any liver disease while others can progress to cirrhosis and even liver cancer.

It depends: Hep b may never become "chronic"; chronic being a relative term, testing for core antibodies determines the chronicity of the disease. Regardless of antibody levels, you still have the ability to infect someone else so proper precautions, and informing your partner, are essential!
