A member asked:

How does having gas/food in the peritoneal cavity feel like? would you get sick immediately, what damage is possible? could you get foul smelling gas?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Big problem: If air or food enters the peritoneal cavity from a perforation of the intestine, whil some people may wall off the area and do ok, this is typically a life threatening situation whereby you would become sick over a period of hours, developing severe abdominal pain that is constant, and worse when you move around. If you think you have this, please go to an emergency room asap.
