Congenital problem: Sometimes the placenta and umbilical cord do not for properly. However, this should not concern you if your child is normal.

See below: The short umbilical cord might be from the decreased fetal movements during the pregnancy or decreased amount of amniotic fluid, called oligohydramnious.

Not significant: Cords vary in length, needing only to be long enough to connect baby to the placenta and assure transfer of nutrients.The longest I've seen was about 7 feet, but baby had it wrapped 5 times around the neck before her c/s delivery at term. (normal baby) the average is about 2-3 feet.I see no reason to worry about it.
