Is there a prophylactic that can be used for migraines?

Yes: Something as simple as Propranolol or a calcium channel blocker may keep them at bay. Try something simple and cheap before moving on to some of the more elaborate medications. Good luck.

Several: The fda (usa) approves propanolol, timolol, valproex, and topirimate, and docs sometimes use tricyclics, calcium channel blockers, and even naproxen. However, otc remedies may work even better: butterbur, feverfew, magnesium, co-q-10, riboflavin. Might discuss this with your doc, as with so many choices, one or another may work well.
