They keep current on the latest techniques and procedures. They often are affiliated with a breast center of excellence or cancer center.

Many: A breast sugeon can be any of the following: a general surgeon who has limited his/her practice to breast surgery. An oncologic surgeon with more emphasis on breast sugery. A general or oncologic surgeon who has gone thru a breast surgery fellowship training program. There is no specific specialty board for breast surgery. However any of the above mentioned surgeons may become board certified in surgery. Plastic surgeons are usually not referred to as breast surgeons even though they do breast surgery. They would be considered reconstructive or cosmetic breast surgeons.
