Many: A breast sugeon can be any of the following: a general surgeon who has limited his/her practice to breast surgery. An oncologic surgeon with more emphasis on breast sugery. A general or oncologic surgeon who has gone thru a breast surgery fellowship training program. There is no specific specialty board for breast surgery. However any of the above mentioned surgeons may become board certified in surgery. Plastic surgeons are usually not referred to as breast surgeons even though they do breast surgery. They would be considered reconstructive or cosmetic breast surgeons.

BreastCancer Surgeon: Breast surgeons are usually general surgeons who specialize in the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer. Stated another way, we are the doctors who primary care physicians or gynecologists send their patients to who have breast lumps, abnormal mammograms, breast pain, etc. While there are post-residency fellowships available, there is no formal board certification.
