Specializes in Breast Surgery

Well......: All breast surgeons are trained general surgeons who have completed additional training in breast diseases. Many general surgeons perform good breast surgery and keep up with the new breast surgery techniques. They are usually active members of the american society of breast surgeons. Many breast surgeons do a 1-2 year fellowship training in breast surgery, but this is not a requirement.

Interest & expertise: Breast surgeons have all gone through general surgery training followed by specialized additional training in breast disease (i.e. Courses, breast fellowship, etc.) to obtain additional expertise to accompany an increased interest and focus in the area of breast health. Most breast surgeons will have dedicated a majority or all of their practice to breast health issues.

Not Necessarily.: Generally speaking, a breast surgeon is usually a general surgeon who concentrates his/her practice performing breast surgery. He/she may have additional fellowship training and/or specialized training in oncologic surgery.
