Care of sick newborn: This is a subspecialty of pediatrics which focuses on the medical care of sick newborn babies. Some babies, because of prematurity, infection, congenital malformations, compromised pregnancies and other reasons, have difficulties with the transition from intrauterine life to the outside world and require treatment and support in an neonatal intensive care unit until healthy enough to go home.
