Post op care: For a neonatal patient, postoperative care can be provided by a number of different physicians depending upon the type and complexity of surgery, as well as the actual or anticipated post-operative course, and other co-morbid patient factors. Optimal care may be rendered by a team of physicians or one, but often there is a team of individuals caring for any one patient beyond just a single doctor.

Often both: For a neonate in a nicu, after a complex operation, it is best to have postoperative care in a team approach by both the neonatologist and the pediatric surgeon. The former may be more skilled in medical care of the baby (eg, nutrition, ventilation). The latter knows more about the operation itself and the expected postoperative course and possible complications. It is best if they work together.
